Alternity Messenger is a multi-protocol instant messenger program for Linux. Currently it only supports AIM, but has been designed to add others in the future. The project was started with two specific goals, functionality and usability. I found in my wanderings of Linux and open source software, that many have great features, yet are not user friendly. Those that are user friendly have no features and are often poorly written. This project was started to bridge that gap, specifically with instant messenger programs.
December 31st, 2004 - "Little Dot" Release
So it's been over a year, and its time, and just in time for the new year. Here is the latest release of Alternity, for Mac OSX and for Linux. It has all the functionality of last years release plus some new things. The main part of this release is a rewrite that was done all year, which has made it quite stable. Work has already begun on the next release, and it will surely be less then a year. There are some buttons that don't do anything and some bugs, but altogether its pretty good. Screenshots will be posted soon, until then you will just have to try it.
December 8th, 2004 - Milestones
Back on last Thursday, December 2nd, Alternity had its first successful fully functional bundled run on a Mac. The port took 2 days and has several issues still, one being many UI issues because of Apple style guidelines built into the Mac UI. It is however quite useable and I have been using it on my laptop.
The current state of Alternity is very good and stable. It is not yet to the level it was when the last release (over a year ago) was made, since there was a code rewrite was done while in grad school. Doesn't allow for much time. Currently Alternity supports most things that the previous verson did, but has a new account manager and help system, is more stable and just plain better. A release is planned hopefully soon if I can get it to the level of last year's release in terms of functionality.
October 2nd, 2004 - Slow going
Some time has passed and I havent made much progress. I have done some work with the preferences system, but it's not close to complete. School has been busy with both classes and my work for the department.
September 12th, 2004 - Not dead (yet)
Well, my computer died this summer and I have it working again (I think). It still is causing issues from time to time, but for the last day it has been stable. I have resumed work and it will be some time before the next release. I may make a preview release in the time being.
June 6th, 2004 - Release Plans
As I sit here remaking most of Alternity, I realize I need a target for a release. The current road map points to about a month before a release, as I have much to get done. The reason for the delay is to make it as good as it was, since it has been completely rebuilt fixing all the flaws I put in. New version will include an account manager (already done) and a fully working log manager. Of course all the functionality that was there before will be there again. When release time gets closer I will post more info on the upcoming version.
May 28th, 2004 - Progress
Alternity loads its protocols from plugins now and allows much more flexibility in how protocols deal with services. Work continues to get TOC back to operation as it was in the last release.
May 21th, 2004 - I'm still alive
The last 6 months have been long with little time for programming. However, it is summer, I have no classes, and actually nothing else to do. Work will resume shortly.
December 4th, 2003 - Work (and life) resume
I'm at school and have an apartment now, so I'll get back to work on Alternity shortly. There will be less time for it since I will have school work, but I still intend on working on it.
November 30th, 2003 - Graduate School
While on vacation I was accepted to grad school, which begins Monday. I don't have a place to live yet, so I don't expect to update or work on anything.
November 21st, 2003 - November 29th, 2003 - On Vacation
I will be on vacation for about a week in Arizona. Very little work will probably get done, so don't expect any updates until the very end of the month.
November 18th, 2003 - Launch of Carina
The Carina Project was started last spring for a class. It is to be a viewer of file formats, most importantly, 3D graphics and models. Work was stopped last May but has resumed. Check out the new Carina pages with the menu on the left.
November 17th, 2003 - Release 20031117
New version posted. There is a known issue that crashes the program with some screen names, so the previous version is also available. The previous version I believe is free of the bug. There have been alot of enhancements, so give it a try.
October 23rd, 2003 - Release 20031023
A new version is up. Note that the executable changed names from vlim to alternity. This fixes the buddylist issues along with adding some new features. See the changes for more description.
